Nozzle Management: An Effective Solution to Shortages of Electronic Materials Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic

2020-04-08

Share:

The COVID-19 pandemic was first contained in China in early 2020, with effective transmission control and isolation measures. However, starting from February 2020, the outbreak spread to Europe, the Americas and the rest of the world, causing severe disruptions to the material supply chain in the electronics manufacturing industry. As a pillar industry of China’s economy, electronics manufacturing represented by 5G technology and network infrastructure projects are crucial to enhancing China’s overall technological competitiveness and seizing global high-tech leadership. Amid the pandemic, how can the electronics manufacturing industry cope with material shortages, cut costs and boost production capacity?

Component mounting is one of the most critical steps in electronic assembly. Research shows that a significant portion of component loss occurs during the mounting process. With the wide adoption of 0201 components and the emerging era of 01005 and even smaller components, mounting accuracy and reliability in modern SMT processes face greater challenges than ever before. This process mainly relies on the vacuum pickup and release of precision nozzles on placement machines. In mass production, placement machine nozzles operate at high frequency and reciprocation to achieve high mounting efficiency.

Data indicates that component loss in the mounting process mainly stems from:

  • Defects in components themselves
  • Feeder malfunctions
  • Material packaging issues
  • Component rejection during mounting, mainly due to:
    1. Insufficient suction during pickup (nozzle damage, internal hole clogging)
    2. Camera recognition errors (damaged reflectors)
    3. Malfunction of nozzle buffer springs
    4. Incorrect nozzle type selection (unrecognized barcode type)

As shown above, effective management of placement machine nozzles is critical to reducing material loss, especially in nozzle cleaning, traceability and functional inspection, placing higher demands on production management.

Clean Nozzle After Washing

Synergie Machinery’s 209 Series All-in-One Nozzle Cleaning & Inspection Machine enables effective traceability and management of placement machine nozzles, keeping them in optimal condition. This significantly reduces component rejection and loss, easing material shortages for electronics manufacturers.

Responding to customer needs, Synergie’s R&D engineers developed the 209 Series Intelligent Nozzle Inspection & Cleaning Machine, providing a complete solution in the following areas:

  • Nozzle Cleaning: Rapid cleaning via customized high-speed airflow and vertical reciprocating motion.
  • Code Scanning & Traceability: Built-in upper/lower light sources and cameras accurately read QR codes on various nozzles, recording type and serial number for full-process traceability.
  • Damage & Reflector Inspection: System cameras capture images, and software analyzes surface cracks and reflector wear for reliable defect detection.
  • Vacuum Inspection: High-sensitivity sensors detect airflow changes inside nozzle bores to verify vacuum performance and ensure quality.
  • Through-Hole Inspection: Specialized cameras and light sources inspect internal nozzle bores to confirm cleanliness and integrity.
